The route to Gila Bend started on some unfriendly roads. Our group decided to take an alternate route, entering the freeway prematurely, and bypassing five additional miles of rough pavement. If stopped, we were going to say that we made a wrong turn which was prompted by the GPS. As it turns out, we were legal and the official fifty-two mile route will most undoubtedly be modified next year.
During the first twenty-five miles, we were sheltered from the sun by cloud cover and rode with Ken, Udi, Roger, Marla, and Gail. After the clouds moved East, the sun shone brightly and the moderate temperatures shot up to near 90. About that time, Roger lost a screw from his cleat and could not extricate his foot from the pedal without removing his shoe. Begrudgingly we were ordered to clear out and we left the boys behind.
Marianne joined us for the final push intotown. We arrived in Gila Bend proper just after lunch time. So, we stopped at Sophia's for an authentic Mexican food before traveling the final two miles to our home for the evening, Augie's RV Park. Accommodations include two restrooms for 60 riders/staff and an air conditioned public space.
UK Update: Graham is using our Verizon hotspot, so you should be hearing from him shortly.
